Volunteer

 

Thank you for your interest in volunteering in the East Lake community. Volunteers are critical to the success of our programs. By sharing both personal and work experience, volunteers bring real-life models to all of the residents of East Lake (young and old!), which helps bridge the gap between the importance of education and building a better future.  Whether you are looking for an individual or group experience, the East Lake Foundation has opportunities that will accommodate various interests and schedules:

Charles R. Drew Charter School Junior and Senior Academies (6th-11th grade)

  • Tutoring and mentoring
  • Financial literacy programming
  • Info sessions about secondary education and career development workshops ie. A View from Drew, Career Lessons for Life, Take a Teen to Work, Drew Summer Experience see additional information
  • Special events ie. Robotics Tournament, Science Fair, Designorama, Career Week

Charles R. Drew Charter School Elementary Academy (PreK-5th grade)  

  • Read Alouds
  • Literacy Center
  • Math Lab
  • After School Program instruction
  • Special events ie. Fall Festival, Holiday Party, Project Based Learning Showcase
  • General classroom assistance

CREW (Creating Responsible, Educated, Working) Teens – a program for Drew Charter alumni who are now 12th graders or college students. It provides support to complete high school, apply for college and prepare for careers.

  • Assist with college essays and FAFSA paperwork
  • Facilitate seminars about resume writing
  • Conduct mock interviews
  • Help navigate internship process
  • Provide support in coordinating college tours
  • Take a Teen to Work (job shadowing)
  • CREW Summer Institute (4 week professional development training)
  • CREWTIP (6 week internship program)

The First Tee® of East Lake - A year-round golf program that uses the principles of golf – discipline, hard work and integrity – to enhance the academic achievement and life skills to more than 800 East Lake area youth (5-17 years old).  Participants play at Charlie Yates Golf Course, East Lake's public, nine-hole course designed by famed golf architect Rees Jones.  Volunteers assist with basic golf instruction and mentoring.

Resident & Community Support Program (RCSP) - The RCSP focuses on providing all residents at The Villages of East Lake, our mixed-income apartment community, with community building and economic stabilization resources.  Volunteer assist with community events including:

  • Set-up and/or clean up
  • Registration
  • Food service
  • Monitoring children’s activities
  • Vendor support

Sheltering Arms Early Education and Family Center - Located adjacent to The Villages of East Lake, Sheltering Arms serves 135 children from 6 weeks to 5 years old. Volunteer activities include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Teacher’s helper
  • Performances (music, singing, puppets, etc)
  • Reading Pals/Play Buddies
  • General organization and clean up
  • In-Kind such as office supplies and printing, paper, equipment, and professional
  • Group activities (civic, school, and corporate): Reading Pals/Play Buddies and assist with parties or enrichment activities

 

Corporate Engagement:  The East Lake Foundation benefits greatly from the generosity of volunteer groups, ranging from corporate groups to school groups and more. Volunteer activities can be planned for weekdays or Saturdays. Volunteer Qualifications:  Whether volunteering as an individual or part of a group, each volunteer must meet the following qualifications:

  • Ability to pass a background check and provide contact information for two professional or academic references
  • U.S. citizen, or hold a current work visa, student visa or green card
  • Community service hours for school, work, club or court*
  • We welcome volunteers with a variety of skills and backgrounds
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills

If you'd like to join us as an East Lake volunteer, please complete the form below.  You will receive a confirmation email that it has been received.  Volunteer Program staff will communicate with applicants via email or phone throughout the application process.

 *The types offenses allowed include:  DUI, traffic violations, loitering and various misdemeanors (at the discretion of the East Lake Foundation). Felony offenses are not eligible for community service with the East Lake Foundation or its programs.  All individuals that have been court-ordered to perform community service of five (5) or more hours must provide documentation verifying the type of offense.
